Welcome to Talamh Life Centre

Talamh Life Centre set up in 1999 to help manage the land of Talamh Housing Co-op and facilitate the use of its resources by the wider community. It is a Scottish limited company separate from the Co-op and its primary aims are:

  • To enhance the various habitats of the Birkhill estate.
  • To advance education and training in relation to the natural environment, traditional craft skills, sustainability, arts and music, and organic food production.
  • The care of some of Talamh buildings for public, historic and architectural benefit. TLC is a building preservation trust.

NOVEMBER TREE WEEKEND!
FRIDAY 21st to SUNDAY 23rd NOVEMBER 2008, 10am to 4pm

This November weekend we will be tree and hedge planting, cutting willow, tidying up living willow structures, providing general habitat maintenance, taking care of trees already planted, and, if there's time after that lot, weeding around the tree nursery.

Home-made soup and bread for lunch will be available and hot drinks during the day.

Come and take part in what's going on for as much of the time as you want, or you're welcome to just visit during the weekend to see what's happening and have a look around the 50 acre site.

Talamh has tree care and tree planting weekends in November and February, during the planting season. Bring warm and waterproof clothes, and good footwear - it can get muddy here!

Habitat

Talamh has 50 acres of land that includes wetlands, woodland and acid heath. Thousands of trees have been planted, including many by local Coalburn school children. Each year we undertake invasive species control.

Gardens

We grow vegetables in two large gardens ("top" and "bottom" gardens), and four terraces. Best of all is our polytunnel where there is intensive production including sweetcorn, peas, beans, strawberries and lots more.

TLC manages its own fruit and nut trees and a large soft fruit garden with red and blackcurrants, gooseberries, raspberries and lots of rhubarb. Additionally we work with a traditional Clyde Valley plum orchard. These orchards are becoming rare and otherwise uneconomic to run.

Education

We have had many open days, festivals, events and courses held at Talamh. Highlights include biodiesel, basketry and living willow workshops. Green Future festivals have had local craft producers and groups displaying their information.

Visiting Us

We're always happy to meet new people at our events. Otherwise please contact us first by email or phone. It may be possible for overnight visitors to stay with the Housing Co-op, please contact them directly.
